Aerial Photograph A photograph that is taken from the air. Aerial photographs are taken by special cameras that
can be calibrated to a high degree of accuracy, and are usually taken of the land directly below
the aircraft.
Aerial Survey An aerial survey is conducted using cameras attached to an aircraft. A bird's-eye view is useful
for quick mapping of large or complex sites.
CD-ROM Computer Disk-Read Only Memory. A disk encased in a plastic coating that is "pitted" with
electronic data and has an ultra-high density storage capacity which is read by a laser.
Cannot be changed by the user.
Compression The process of reducing the size of a file.
Digital Image An image that has been scanned, cleaned, cataloged and made available for web site
display, automated searches and, depending on licensing status, immediate availability via
download. The majority of images in the Picture Research Solutions collections are digitized,
with a goal of making the entire catalog digital.
Digital Watermark An imperceptible corruption of the digital image file. Digital watermarking will allow for later
identification of the image as a Picture Research Solutions aerial photograph, should use of
the image become a disputed issue. Current digital watermarking technology can introduce
perceptible corruption of the image file at certain resolutions.
Download Sending a file from another device to your computer.
File Size Sometimes used interchangeably with resolution or pixel dimensions to indicate the quality
of an image.
High Resolution This resolution is required for digital aerial photographs that are to be printed. The high number
of dots per square inch produces a high-quality image in printing or on a computer display screen.
IPTC Headers IPTC headers are a popular set of metadata for digital image files, and have been in common use for a decade.
The IPTC data fields describe such diverse attributes as the name of the photographer, the date and place of the
photo and the subject matter. By expanding the types of data and providing a structured list of possible values
for some data fields, photographers, editors, resellers and consumers will be more likely to find the photo they
want in ways that fit easily into their workflows. Photographers and news services around the world use IPTC
metadata format schemas to embed identifying characteristics such as contact information, captions, credits,
location and time and dates within digital photos and scans. This information can be read by content management
systems, used by virtually every newspaper publisher, to review and identify photos they want to publish to
accompany a story.
JPEG Stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group and is the most common compressed standard for
high resolution digital photographs.
Licence Picture Research Solutions does not sell images to you; we licence them. The licence or reproduction
fee that you are charged will cover specific uses that you make of the image. The licence to use that
image is granted upon payment of the fee. If the image is used for a purpose beyond the licence, then
further permission must be sought from Picture Research Solutions or you will be in breach of your
terms and conditions.
Lo-Res This is short for low resolution. If you use a los-res aerial photograph image it will result in lower
quality reproduction because of the number of dots or lines per inch.
Near-Vertical Aerial Photography Near-vertical aerial photography, gives a comprehensive plan-type view of an area.
Oblique Aerial Photography Oblique aerial photography gives a panoramic view of an area, site or even individual building
from a variety of heights and angles.
Resolution This is a measure of stock photography output capability (depending on the fineness or
coarseness of the digitized aerial photograph), usually expressed in dots per inch (dpi). It also
measures the halftone quality, usually expressed in lines per inch (lpi).
RGB Abbreviation for red, green and blue. RGB is a colour model used to represent colour on screen.
Known as an additive colour model. Colours are reproduced by additive amounts of light passing
through a range of pigments. All Picture Research Solutions digital aerial photographs are supplied
as RGB.
