Image Formats and Resolutions
All of the images displayed on the Picture Research Solutions web site were shot on high quality medium-format film and have been professionally scanned at an ultra-high resolution. The quality of our material, therefore, whether in the form of prints or digital images is consistently high.
Due to the constraints of showing images over the internet, where images have to be compressed and protected, we've produced this guide to show you the actual quality of downloaded images and given some samples which do not display the copyright watermark (though note the images are copyrighted and have embedded IPTC information).
The size of an image is dependent upon the number of pixels (individual points of colour on the image) and the chosen resolution (expressed as dots per inch or dpi). All the examples below, give the image width and height pixels and then quote approximate width and height at various dpi settings.
72 dpi The standard resolution of a computer display screen (vdu). 200 dpi Often used for photographs reproduced in newspapers. 300 dpi Used for high quality magazine or brochure reproduction.
Image sizes
We can supply aerial photographs in a wide variety of sizes and formats, but a typical 'standard' package may involve the supply of digital files in RGB JPEG format in the following sizes:
Small Pixel width: 600 Pixel height: 450 Size at 72 dpi: 212mm x 159mm (approx) Size at 200 dpi: 76mm x 57mm (approx) Size at 300 dpi: 51mm x 38mm (approx) Disk size: 60k (approx) Memory size: 350k (approx) Typical use: Quick reference, web and E-mail use

The yellow rectangle on this image is used to illustrate further examples on this page.
Low-Res Pixel width: 1200 Pixel height: 900 Size at 72 dpi: 420mm x 310mm (approx) Size at 200 dpi: 152mm x 113mm (approx) Size at 300 dpi: 101mm x 55mm (approx) Disk size: 600 - 700k (approx) Memory size: 3.5mb (approx) Typical use: Full screen size on a 19-inch monitor. for more detailed reference purposes, E-mail use, PowerPoint presentations etc. These images are around 600 - 700K when compressed, expanding to around 3.5MB when opened and show considerable detail at full screen size even in programmes such as Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Photo Editor etc.

Med-Res Pixel width: 2700 Pixel height: 2000 Size at 72 dpi: 952mm x 707mm (approx) Size at 200 dpi: 343mm x 255mm (approx) Size at 300 dpi: 229mm x 170mm (approx) Disk size: 2.5mb (approx) Memory size: 16mb (approx) Typical use: For reproduction (repro) use at sizes up to 340 x 250mm in newspapers and 250 x 190mm in magazines, brochures etc. These images are around 2.5MB when compressed, expanding to around 16MB when opened. They can be enlarged up to 3-fold on screen without loss of detail, while still loading fairly quickly on a moderately fast computer, in programmes such as Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Photo Editor etc.

Hi-Res Pixel width: 4000 Pixel height: 3000 Size at 72 dpi: 1411mm x 1048mm (approx) Size at 200 dpi: 508mm x 377mm (approx) Size at 300 dpi: 339mm x 252mm (approx) Disk size: 7mb (approx) Memory size: 35mb (approx) Typical use: for high quality reproduction and detailed reference/analytical purposes. These images are ideal for large format display and exhibition printing and high quality litho printing at full-page A4 brochure size and above. They are detailed enough to extract selective areas for display or litho printing purposes and they can also be enlarged around 5-fold on screen for studying quite small sections of the image in considerable detail. They are therefore very useful for a number of detailed survey, planning and analysis purposes. As these Hi-Res images can be up to 7MB in size when compressed and may expand to well over 35MB when opened however, their memory requirement means that they may only be opened and viewed in dedicated photo-manipulation programmes such as Photoshop, Corelpaint, Paintshop Pro etc. on a fairly fast computer.

IPTC Header Encoding Note that all the images purchased from Picture Research Solutions have fully encoded IPTC headers. For more information on what IPTC headers are, their uses, and the tracking information embedded within them, please see the IPTC header FAQ page. |
