Crystal Rig Wind Farm is located in the Lammermuir Hills, about 11km south of Dunbar in East Lothian and 16.5km north-west of Duns in the Scotttish Borders. It was built within an area of commercial forestry, some of which was felled to accommodate the turbines. Natural Power Consultants (NPC) selected the site and performed wind engineering, site design, development management and onsite construction. The wind farm was developed with Fred Olsen Renewables Ltd. With an installed generating capacity of 62.5MW, Crystal Rig was the largest wind farm site on land in the UK when it was completed and It won the 2004 Best Renewable Project prize in the Green Energy Awards. The project used Nordex N80 turbines, with a rotor diameter of 80m on a structure which is still less than 100m in total from base to tip.
